I have the 4=3 with electric overdrive. I want to replace the leather boot but I can't figure out how to remove the shift lever knob. I see the t shaped wedge but How do I get the plastic piece for the push button disconnected?
Thanks for any help
I had an '88 convertible with an automatic transmission but if your shifter has a similar "square" push button on the shifter knob like mine was, then all you have to do is use a thin screw driver to wedge between the push button and the shifter knob and push up to work the button out of the shifter. I think it is spring loaded so don't lose the spring. To remove the shifter knob I think there is a snap ring that needs to be removed and then the shifter knob comes off. Again, that was how I was able to remove my shifter knob from the shifter shaft. To remove the boot with the knob off you will need to remove the center console and the boot is attached from underneath this center plastic console which is very brittle. Be careful not to over tighten the screws that hold it or the plastic will break. I hope this helps.
On my 85, the top of the shift knob pops off, and then the T shaped piece can be removed easiest with a paint can lid opener, the type with the very end bent over. Once it's pried out, then the knob turns on the threads until it comes off. There is a spring up the middle for the reverse lockout. Once the knob is removed, the entire console, shifter boot and all can be removed over the shifter. No idea if the overdrive wire is a problem, as it was a separate switch on the 85.
I found the answer and it was right in the service manual....geeeeez. It is a t shaped bar that you unwind counterclockwise and keep track of the number of turns. Thia is the electronic overdrive piece.
I am ready to put this back together and am wondering where the springs and other piece go. I don’t recall these pieces but they were in the console.
Thanks for any help.
Sorry, mine was an automatic transmission but you might try to look at some Youtube videos that could help. Something like https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=c4+corvette+gear+shift+removal&qpvt=c4+corvette+gear+shift+removal&FORM=VDRE might help.
