I have had Flowmaster and Corsa on my 95.  While I loved the throaty Flowmaster rumble, the resonance was a killer from 1200 - 2100 rpm.  Switched to Corsa, best money I ever spent.  No resonance, easy to install, looks and sounds great.  Since "sound" is in the ear of the beholder, not putting down any brand, just expressing an opinion.

Anybody else have good and bad comparisons? Recomendations?

I have Magnaflows and like the sound....TPIS headers into one 4" straight pipe, then out 2.5 into mufflers....
Only thing I dont like....the round tips...I like the square tips that the car came with, just not the stock exhaust system.

YMMV

my 90 is basically a stock L98. when i got it wife complained it was too loud. had to replace the whole system and bought it from 2 different places on ebay. cost me less than half of what i would have paid in store.  front y up to and including a high flow catalytic converter from one place and rear y and low back pressure mufflers from another. figured it would be quieter but it wasn't. i along with others like the sound from it and wife still says it's too loud. unfortunately i can't remember the names that they were.

When I got my 88 two years ago it needed a new cat-back system because it was rusted out. (original). I bought a FlowMaster Series 50 cat-back and it is just a little deeper sounding from stock.  Conversation is easy, stereo sounds great. I don't hear any drone, just the sound of a healthy l98. Smile

I am running LPE Signature Headers with high performace cats and Borla Mufflers. It has a nice rumble to it and sounds great when you punch it.

I have the stock system on my 1995.  It is a little to quiet. I think the stock system was also on my 1990, I liked the sound better on my older car that I traded.

I installed a Corsa Pulse exhaust several years ago in my '91 ZR1 and really like it.  I was initially looking for a sound that was reminiscent of the 60's and 70's sound, similar to my '72.  I was first looking for a system that was a true dual exhaust, without any crossover.  But couldn't find one, so I bought a FlowMaster catback system because of their claim, and others, of the excellent free flow.  When it arrived, I noticed that the pipes just after the cats joined into one.  I already knew this but as I said earlier, I couldn't find anything true dual.  Anyway, before I installed them (some time had passed) I was browsing a couple of parts catalogs and came across the Corsa's.  To me it appeared as close to true duals as any others.  So I bought them and installed them instead.  Too much time had passed for me to return the FlowMaster.  It was never installed and is even in the boxes that they were delivered in.  If anyone out there is interested in them, let me know.  I have pics also.

My advice to anyone looking to buy a new exhaust system, is to just pick out the exhaust that sounds best to them.  A different sound is, after all, the biggest reason people ditch their factory exhaust systems to begin with....

Pick an exhaust that sounds good to you and don't worry about anything else.   Any performance increase you're likely to get out of an aftermarket exhaust will be pretty much the same regardless of what brand it is.  It's only when you get into really high HP applications where some brands tend to perform better than others, but for a stock/mildy built street cars, they'll all perform about the same.  Late model C4's in particular, already have a really good flowing exhaust from the factory so you're not likely to feel much, if any, improvement other than a nicer sound.

I ran a  Borla exhaust system on both my previous Fbody cars but when I picked up my '92 Vette last year, I chose to go with Corsa instead.  My biggest reason for choosing to go with Corsa (aside from the fact I love the sound of an LT1 Vette with this exhaust) is that it's the only exhaust system I know of that all but eliminates interior drone.  I used to love driving around in really LOUD cars (part of the reason I always ran Borla on my Fbodys Big smile)  but now that I'm older (and a little bit wiser) I've grown tired of all the loudness and "drone" that usually goes along with it.  My Vette is a daily driver rain or shine and I put a lot of miles on her every day.  I don't want to put up with the hastle of listening to drone all day long.  The Corsa does it's job very well and keeps my interior drone-free.

Of coarse, it wasn't untill I finally heard what my car sounds like being driven by somebody else, that I finally realised that while it may be quite in the interior, when the car is floored, it's frightingly loud on the outside LOL

I can't wait to finish my 396 LT4 and drop her in.  My Corsa's will definitely have their work cut for them then....

Threw the Magnaflows on as it was just too quiet, it does drone but sounds good when you get on it. very simple install...cut off old ones...bolt on new ones ...45 minutes.

I have a borla cat back exhaust system that I really like.  Exhaust sounds great.  Little bit of an echo inside a building though.  Next time I will have to shoot the video outside.

How about exhaust cutouts? I was thinking about getting someone to weld a short y pipe right behind each muffler on the stock exhaust so its loud on demand and quiet for the late nights...

I wonder if it would sound like the muffler eliminators or maybe better???

Hey Mike.  You mean behind the resonator, kinda like the old lake pipes??  Can you pass emisions in Jersey with that set up?  Probably sound great, but the resonance might make your head explode LOL

Dogfish246.  Thanks for posting the video with sound.  I have a 93 and have been thinking of upgrading the exhaust for some time now.   Not really interested in the performance but the sound sends chills down my back.  My concern is in the droan that I have heard about.  My vette is a weekend cruiser spending much of the time on the highways running in 6th. I am not what you would call a mechanic so can you tell me where you started and stopped the new exhaust.  What do I need  to do to get that sound.  Also can anyone chime in on the best place to buy the Corsa.

Thanks
Mike

What I mean is right in front of the muffler (where the exhaust pipe connects to the muffler) so that the cutouts aim right under the mufflers (to reduce resonance and keep exhaust gases out of the car). I dont think that there will be a problem with emissions in NJ as long as the cutouts are closed during the inspection.

Just an idea I had. I wish I could find someone with cutouts to hear/see how it worked for them...

Not a bad idea, I have thought about the similar pipes, just behind resonator, exiting in front of rear wheels.  Not sure what the effect would be on cutting back pressure and increased noise and after spending the money on the Corsa's (which I love), I'm afraid to find out LOL
I'm leaning toward headers (Exotic Muscle) and Random Tech. cats thru the Corsa, hoping for performance gain but keeping the resonance at bay, while still passing emissions.  Of course then I'll have to do the heads and cam and intake...Wacko

With your setup with the Corsa, there is not much to do because it is already as good as you can get. Free flowing and no resonance, if you add cutouts it may cause some resonance. I dont know anymore, I might just take the chance and see how it works! I just love the idea of a open, loud, and free flowing exhaust on demand and then quiet for when you have a headache or drive late at night...

Happy Thanksgiving!

I just went with a Borla system on my 84 and noticed a difference immediately.  Great sound,  more power and didnt break the bank.  Too bad the weather has been lousy the last week and havent had it out much.

I enjoy this forum, everyone seems to be be driving their C4(s). I installed JB shorty headers along with HiFlo CATS, a DynoMax system w/ Xpipes and their glass pack mufflers. What I perfered was the original rectangular black tips. the system eleminates the resonator. There is a bit more sound inside. The outside has a nice rumble, but not to sharp. The cost is half of the major brands. You all would enjoy the sound of a cammed up 383 LT, it has a nice lope to it now. JRB

Check out the red corvette 1990 standard convertible stock system and changed to a Magna Flow cat back system 15658 with 3.5" tips quad mufflers on corvetteguys.com click on exhaust then click on C4 scroll down to my video. They are louder than stock with a low range throaty sound. They also have have been dyno tested to improve Hp by 16.5 and torque by 13.

I have had my 1991 about a year. It has a full magnaflow system with skinny little bullet mufflers and high flow cats. It was impossible to have any sort of conversation inside the car. Flowmaster 50 claimed to lessen the inside volume. With those it is still loud inside with drone being improved but still significant. Something with less drone would be a good thing. I don't know where to go from here either. Increased the wattage of the alpine amp but that is not a fix.

Mt 91 had a full Magnaflow on it when I bought it, including hi flow cats. Great sound but loud, you cannot have a conversation in the car. Switched the straight through bullet like mufflers to Flowmaster 50s'. Lesser tone but just as loud and just as much drone. That was $250 wasted. I may end up going back to stock mufflers, with the hi-flow cats, it'll probably still be a little louder than stock but easier to live with than what I have now.

My '87 has simply got a dual 60mm s/s pipe system all the way from the stock headers out to two small boxes at the ends which are sleeved to negate their effect, no cats or other restrictive items. Its sounds great and idles nicely. Driving, its quiet enough that I can hardly hear it even with the roof off, but with a free flow filter etc, it'll waken the dead with an awesome V8 soundtrack when I tach it up.. No drone either at any speed. In fact, at a car show, I won the best exhaust note beating a new MB 6.3 V12 gullwing complete with its stock cutouts!!
